Torres reveals Gunners offer

07 April 2008

Ahead of this weeks second leg UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie with Arsenal, Torres claims he was the subject of interest from the Gunners in the past.
Liverpool signed Torres from Atletico Madrid last summer in a club record deal and the striker has established himself as a firm fans' favourite at Anfield with a superb debut campaign.
Torres says Arsenal made an offer for his services after he helped Spain win the European Under 19 Championship six years ago only for the player to remain at Atletico.
The 24-year-old first came to the attention of Europe's top clubs including Arsenal at those Under 19 championship.
"That's when offers started to come in," Torres told the Liverpool Echo. "For example, there was one from Arsenal."
Torres will be aiming to show Arsenal what they missed out on as he looks to end their Champions League dreams on Tuesday night.
The Spanish international admits it will be a tough battle to progress even though Liverpool earned a 1-1 draw and away goal in the first leg in North London.
"We were pleased with the result last week because we got an away goal and we came away with a draw," added Torres.
Good team
"But that does not mean tonight's game will be straightforward. Arsenal are a very good team and we will have to play well if we are to beat them.
"We have confidence because we are playing well but that does not mean we are taking anything for granted. People are saying we are favourites but for me the tie is quite balanced.
"We have played Arsenal three times this season and each time the score has been 1-1 so that shows that there is not that much between the two teams.
"Earlier this season Arsenal came to Anfield and got a draw and we have just drawn two games at The Emirates. The two teams know each other well and we respect each other so tonight could be just as tight as the previous games."
